Key questions of discussion will be the following: How can the differences between European political cultures in the field of security be reconciled? What should be European priorities, and in which format would they best be aligned for the EU to embrace strategic autonomy in international security? What does strategic autonomy in security entail? Would there be a need for new institutions? What role does NATO play, and how does NATO already contribute to this end? What role can the United Kingdom play, and how could it be included in a more autonomous European security architecture? How can continued close cooperation with the United States be ensured while at the same time reducing Europe’s dependence on its transatlantic partner? Which security capabilities has the EU yet to develop to achieve strategic autonomy; who should and can contribute best, and how? What role could PESCO play?\nThis event is part of Aspen Germany’s virtual event series on “The Future of Europe: Towards Strategic Autonomy?”. In public conversations with decision-makers and experts we discuss how strategic autonomy translates into concrete policies in different areas and how the concept is perceived and interpreted within the EU and in different member states.
