Eva-Maria Liimets ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva-Maria_Liimets ),\nMinister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia,\nSir Julian King ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_King_(diplomat) ),\nSenior Adviser, Flint Global, Fellow, Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies (RUSI) and Oxford Internet Institute,\nDr. Claudia Major ( https://www.swp-berlin.org/en/researcher/claudia-major ),\nHead of International Security Division, German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP),\nand\na French perspective,\nmoderated by\nDr. Stormy-Annika Mildner,\nExecutive Director, Aspen Institute Germany,\nThe panelists will discuss the concept of strategic autonomy in the field of European security. Key questions of discussion will be the following: How can the differences between European political cultures in the field of security be reconciled? What should be European priorities, and in which format would they best be aligned for the EU to embrace strategic autonomy in international security? What does strategic autonomy in security entail? Would there be a need for new institutions? What role does NATO play, and how does NATO already contribute to this end? What role can the United Kingdom play, and how could it be included in a more autonomous European security architecture? How can continued close cooperation with the United States be ensured while at the same time reducing Europe’s dependence on its transatlantic partner? Which security capabilities has the EU yet to develop to achieve strategic autonomy; who should and can contribute best, and how? What role could PESCO play?\nThis event is part of Aspen Germany’s virtual event series on “The Future of Europe: Towards Strategic Autonomy?”. In public conversations with decision-makers and experts we discuss how strategic autonomy translates into concrete policies in different areas and how the concept is perceived and interpreted within the EU and in different member states. The series thus addresses the concept of European strategic autonomy in different areas such as economy and trade, security, the Green Deal, as well as digitalization and technology.\nIf you would like to register for this online event, please click here ( http://crm.aspeninstitute.de/civicrm/event/register?reset=1&id=5338&cid=31772&cs=9a00816fdab01890ed185e7fc7f2ec5b_1634811767_2016 ).\nThe discussion will be held in English.\nPlease note that only registered participants will receive the dial-in details via e-mail.\n\n\n\n
